The State of Illinois and Your Solar Electric System

The State of Illinois is on-track to becoming one of the most "green-friendly" states within the country . . . Thus, there are a wide array of in-state rebates and financial opportunities that can help you offset the cost of your solar energy system.

The following is a representative sample of those opportunities. Unless otherwise indicated, they are all are summarized from data obtained from the Database for State Incentives for Renewables and Efficency.

Solar Energy Rebate Program

The State of Illinois is currently offering a 30% cash rebate up to
$10,000.

Green Permit Program

The Chicago Department of Buildings (DOB) Green Permit Program provides developers and owners with an incentive to build green by streamlining the permit process timeline for projects which are designed to maximize indoor air quality and conserve energy and resources. Projects accepted into the Green Permit Program can receive permits as little as 15 business days.

Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation (ICECF)

The ICECF provides grants, on a competitive basis, to programs and projects that improve energy efficiency, develop renewable-energy resources, and preserve and enhance natural areas and wildlife habitats in Illinois.The ICECF give preference to building-integrated PV systems and/or PV systems installed on buildings that attain a rating of "LEED Silver" or higher. These systems must supply at least 25% of the building's peak load.

Special Assessment for Solar Energy Systems

Illinois offers a special assessment of solar energy systems for property-tax purposes. For property owners who register with a chief county assessment officer, solar energy equipment is valued at no more than a conventional energy system. Eligible equipment includes both active and passive solar-energy systems.

The Federal Government can also be a crucial partner in helping you purchase your solar electric system, as it has a number of incentives which help make solar power a viable option for addressing the ongoing rising costs of traditional energy-generating systems.

Federal Investment Tax Credits

Residential

  • 30% tax credit with no limit.

Business

  • 30% tax credit with no limit.

  • Modified Accelerated Cost-Recovery System (MACRS). Under MACRS, businesses may recover investments in certain properties through depreciation deductions.

  • 10% agricultural investment credit.

  • Section 179 deduction and/or five-year accelerated depreciation.

Residential or Business

  • 10% investment credit for buildings constructed prior to 1936.

  • 20% investment credit for certified historic structures.
